Open Arms Closet

The Open Arms Closet is typically designed as a free, accessible resource hub for individuals living with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) and their caregivers. Its purpose is to reduce financial and logistical barriers by providing supportive items that improve daily functioning, comfort, and safety.

The Open Arms Closet often operates on a

“give what you can, take what you need” philosophy:

  • Donations of gently used or new equipment are encouraged
  • Items are redistributed to others in the MG community
  • Helps build a cycle of support among patients and caregivers

The core goal is to:

  • Reduce physical strain and fatigue
  • Increase independence and safety
  • Support caregivers in providing care
  • Improve overall quality of life for people with MG

How it works

Who Can Request Items

  • Individuals diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis
  • Caregivers supporting someone with MG
  • Sometimes healthcare providers can request on behalf of a patient

What Items Are Available

The closet typically includes practical, quality-of-life equipment such as:

  • Mobility aids (canes, walkers, lightweight wheelchairs)
  • Daily living tools (jar openers, reachers, adaptive utensils)
  • Breathing or comfort supports (pillows, wedges, cooling items)
  • Bed Rails
  • Toilet risers
  • Energy conservation tools (shower chairs, grab bars, etc.)

Inventory depends on donations, so availability may vary.

How to Request Items

Requests are usually made through a simple, low-barrier process:

  • Online Google Form:
Users fill out a short request describing:
    • Their needs
    • Diagnosis (sometimes optional or self-reported)
    • Contact information

Review and Matching Process

  • Requests are reviewed by program coordinators or volunteers
  • Items are matched based on:
    • Availability
    • Urgency of need
    • Appropriateness for MG-related symptoms (fatigue, muscle weakness, etc.)

If an exact item isn’t available, our program coordinator or volunteer may suggest alternatives.
